The center was dedicated in 1972 to the nation's most highly decorated Veteran, 2nd LT Audie Murphy, who earned the Medal of Honor during World War II. Their divorce became final two years later in 1951. Murphys deadly accurate rifle shooting accounted for the demise of many enemy soldiers but it was not the United States army that taught Murphy to shoot.
